I entered the #turkana Safari Challenge. It is really a fun way to explore your country and bike. There are 15 challenges which can be combined. In this trip I finished 400km, got my ostrich photo with my bike and Road Side Deli pic. I also summited 3 passes to an altitude of about 1800 meters. I have to have about 10 000 meters in total. On my third Turkana Challenge, I heard rumours of snow on the Swartberg Pass. I ventured out to tackle the challenge but didn't find any snow. However, I did complete other exciting challenges such as enjoying coffee at sunrise, braaing (barbecuing) by the roadside, visiting a UNESCO Heritage Site in the floral region of Swartberg Pass, and adding to my pass elevation. Exploring the Newly Named UNESCO Heritage Site: Pinnacle Point Cave Adventure!
Join me as I continue my #TurkanaSafariChallenge! This thrilling adventure saw me joined by friends Johan and Dirk as we tackled the Robinson Pass and hunted for two significant monuments. My day kicked off with a ride from George to Glentana, where I snapped a photo of my bike by the seaside, completing one of the challenges. Meeting up with my friends at Groot Brak, we rode to Ruiterbosch for a delightfTurkanaChallengeul lunch and discovered a surprise butterfly sanctuary.
Our journey then took us to a monument in Robinson Pass, commemorating a 1998 bus accident, for a Turkana Challenge photo op. We continued to the summit of the pass, capturing another photo at the M.R. Robinson Monument.
The adventure wrapped up with a ride through Oudtshoorn to the breathtaking Outeniqua Pass, where we reflected on our incredible day with George as our backdrop. #turkana #turkanasafarichallenge #tourism
In this video, I visited the newly named #UNESCO World Heritage site at Pinnacle Point Cave, near Mossel Bay. On July 26th, the United Nations recognized this incredible site for its historical significance. I couldn't wait to explore, so I hopped on my Honda Transalp 700 and headed straight there. This visit was part of my Turkana Safari Challenge, where I aimed to visit two UNESCO sites.
I was guided by the knowledgeable Christopher Jantjies, who shared fascinating insights into the cave's ancient history. A big thank you to Yuli from the Point of Human Origins Office for organizing this informative tour.
Pinnacle Point, a small promontory just south of Mossel Bay, has been a key archaeological site since 2000, with discoveries revealing that Middle Stone Age people inhabited the area between 170,000 and 40,000 years ago. This morning, I joined a group of bikers for breakfast at Smitswinkel in Oudtshoorn. However, the sight of snow-capped mountains on the way to De Rust and the Swartberg Pass was too tempting to resist. So, I decided to skip breakfast and head straight to the Swartberg Pass to capture a snow photo with my bike. As part of the #TurkanaSafariChallenge, photographing your bike in the snow is one of the challenges, and I couldn't miss the opportunity. It was freezing on top of the pass, making it hard to hold my camera steady, but the experience was incredibly fulfilling. Another adventure added to the list!

The journey through the lush forest was nothing short of magical, offering the perfect backdrop for a Turkana Safari Challenge Monument photo.
Dalene Matthee, a legendary author known for her "Forest books"—Circles in a Forest, Fiela’s Child, The Mulberry Forest, and Dreamforest—has left an indelible mark on South African literature, and this trip was a tribute to her incredible legacy.
Am I Ready for the start of my 1200km trip?
Day 1 I Ready Steady GO!
I'm gearing up for an 1200km journey on my 2013 Honda Transalp XL700, and preparation is key! Before any long ride, it's crucial to ensure your bike is in top shape. Big thanks to Honda Wing George for giving my bike the service it needs. But remember, it's not just about the bike—staying fit and ready yourself is equally important for a smoother, more enjoyable ride.
The first leg of my 1200km Turkana Safari Challenge took me from George to Graaff-Reinet. It was an adventure-filled day, battling strong side winds. Upon arrival in Graaff-Reinet, I had a bit of a challenge with my Google Maps, so I relied on local help to find my guest house. I also explored the area, visiting the War Memorial, Andries Pretorius Monument, and Gideon Scheepers Monument.

On the second leg of my 1200km motorcycle adventure as part of the Turkana Safari Challenge, I had an incredible day exploring some iconic South African landmarks. Starting early in Graaff-Reinet, I visited the Anglo Boer War Monument, the Big NG Church, and Reinet House. From there, I rode over scenic passes to Nieu Bethesda, where the highlight of my stop was a visit to the fascinating Owl House. Afterward, I tackled a 40km gravel road to connect to the N1 and made my way to Gariep Dam, where I stayed overnight at the Aloha Halfway House. It was a day filled with adventure, although the wind gave me quite a challenge at times. Join me on this thrilling ride through South Africa’s hidden gems!
Day 3 of my 1200km motorcycle road trip started with a breathtaking sunrise over the Gariep Dam. The ride to Beaufort West was one of the coldest I've ever experienced on a bike, leaving me shivering until I warmed up with a hearty breakfast at the Karoo Padstal near Richmond. The flat roads stretched ahead until I reached Beaufort West, but the real highlight came later as I crossed the stunning Molteno Pass. Before heading back to Grace's Place, I made a quick stop at the Christiaan Barnard Museum to end the day on a high note.

Up early on Day 4 of my 1200km Turkana Safari Challenge, I hit the road for the final stretch from Beaufort West to George. After a quick fuel stop, I rode through the vast Karoo as the sun rose, casting blue hues across the horizon. It was a bittersweet ride, knowing this was the last day but feeling excited for the remaining 800km journey ahead. Passing through the stunning Meiringspoort and the picturesque town of De Rust, named "Town of the Year," I wrapped up the ride in George with my Turkana Goody Bag in hand. This journey was unforgettable!
